Stefansson, Vilhjalmur

Handwritten note , pencil on light pink paper aprox. 4" x 6" "V. Stefansson/ 67 Morton St./ NY City/ Apt 2F". A couple of light smudges but writing is clear and strong. Vilhjalmur Stefansson (1879-1962), Canadian born of Icelandic parents, was a noted arctic explorer and student of the Eskimo natives. His first trip to the arctic was in 1906-7 as part of Mikkleson's expedition. He headed his own Canadian Arctic Expedition 1913. Early in the trip, he and some of his shipmates went in search of food only to find upon their return that their ship had drifted away in an ice field and they were unable to find it again. Among his most noted published works were "The Friendly Arctic: Five Years in the Polar Region" (1922) and "My Life with the Eskimo" (1924). (Item ID: X143)
