Ink signature on St. Nicholas Magazine card, dated 1886

Stiff business card, aprox. 3 x5" bearing the imprint and address of St. Nicholas (Magazine). Signed in ink: "Mary Mapes Dodge/ New York/ Dec. 1886". By all accounts the most important influence on children's literature of her era, Mary Mapes Dodge (1831-1905) was an author and editor of juvenile fiction, most famously "Hans Brinker or, The Silver Skates" (1865). For over a quarter century beginning in 1873, Dodge was the editor of the St. Nicholas magazine for children. The signed card is affixed to a larger sheet of blank paper and has a small chip to one corner not affecting the signature. (Item ID: X103)
