In this entry, a key nobleman and a number of knights formerly loyal to Empress Maud turn to King Stephen's side and are captured. Some are ransomed but others remain imprisoned--one of whom (though he is unware of this) is the son of Cadfael, born during the Crusades before Cadfael became a monk. Brother C. leaves the abbey to search for him and encounters frustrations and even murder.
