Boston: Lamson, Wolffe, 1898. first. Hardcover. Collection of three volumes of Washington's "orderly book", the first and third of which are unpublished typescripts. The first volume is formally titled "Orderly Book American Army, August 21-December 31, 1777. Saratoga, N.Y. to Valley Forge, Pa. " 74 pp. The second volume is the 1898 edition of Washington's Orderly Book, May 18-June 11, 177854 pp. with index, plus publisher's catalog at rear; paper covered boards with paper title label, top edge unopened in places, lacking the spine strip. The third volume (and second unpublished volume) is titled "Orderly Book American Army, July 23-December 31, 1778, White Plains, N.Y. to Pluckinin [sic], N.J. 205 pp. Both the unpublished volumes are bound in Continental blue cloth covered boards with spines lettered in gilt, patterned endpapers, and bear the binder's stamp dated 1928. These are generally fine, internally clean and unmarked. A foreword in the 1898 volume states that the Orderly Book printed there is preserved in the Boston Atheneum but does not mention any other volumes there; it also states that "the War Department in Washington possesses several of Washington's Orderly Books, but none covering the period of the present volume." OCLC does not locate the manuscripts of the other two volumes offered here nor do we locate them in the LOC. Item #E8947
