An Old Deed , May 31 1675--Richard Guy, John Fenwick, Thomas Pyle (inscribed by Sharpe)

Salem, NJ: Salem County Historical Society, 1908. First edition. Pamphlet of 12 pp. illustrated with one drawing and two photographs. Inscribed on the bottom edge "From Dr. Edward S. Sharpe 200 Griffith St, Salem, N.J.". Publication of a paper read before the Salem County Historical Society on December 8. 1908 by Dr. Sharpe. Monograph on the oldest document in Dr. Sharpe's collection of material on "Fenwick's Colony", the first British settlement in the proprietorship of West Jersey after the transfer of the colony from to the Swedes to the English. The deed, with predates the earliest manuscript in the "William Penn Deeds" collection, transfer 10,000 acres of land in what is now the northern part of Salem county, township of Pilesgrove, to Richard Guy for the amount of fifty pounds stirling. The deed is signed by Fenwick, was executed on May 31, 1675 and recorded on June 18th. The paper goes on to expound on the persons involved and the subsequent history of the land. Light verical fold, retian only the original front printed red wrap. Item #E23595
