New York: D. Appleton, 1864. First edition First edition. Hardcover in pebbled dark green cloth. xii + 445 pp. plus 10 pp. publisher's catalog at rear. Folding chart integral at p.1. A tight, quite well preserved copy of the scarce Civil War era cooking and hosuekeeping guide. Minor wear at the tips, modest wear at the spine extremities, spine lettering darkened to bronze but fully readable. On the second front blank there is affixed (on the front) a small clipping of a recipe for "Excellent Lemon Pies" and (on the reverse) two small clippings, one for Marble Cake and the other for Cocoanut Pudding. At the top edge of the title page is a pencilled ownership signature and date of April 28/64 which is repeated on the rear free endpaper. There is unobtrusive light tidemarking to the upper margins of the text block to about page 360. Mrs. Haskell offers advice to "young housekeepers" in the areas of selcting a house and furnishings, managing servants, economy in cooking, cheerfulness, entertaining visitors (and "To Husbands---Excuse for the Mistakes of Housekeepers"). The second section deals with nutrtition and elements of food; the third section is general cookery recipies; followed by Breakfast Dishes, Cold Dinners, etc.; sealed, preserved, dries and cooked fruit; wines, brandies, vinegars and cordials; flavored vinegars, pickles, mangoes; gardening and insects; curing meats; dairy work; the sick room, remidies, infants and cooking for invalids.
