Born Julie Garfinkle in New York City in 1913, Garfield was nurtured by the great Group Theatre in the 1930s and became the prophet of the "new actor" in American film. On screen he was the first rebel hero, the forerunner of Brando and Newman. Among his best known films were "The Postman Always Rings Twice" with Lana Turner, "Humoresque" opposite Joan Crawford, and the Oscar winning "Gentleman's Agreement".
