Scarmbles Amongst The Alps, and Down the Rhine

Cleveland: Burrows Bros, (1880). Hardcover. Large octavo in dark olive green cloth decorated and lettered in red and black. All edges gilt. 164 and 75 pp. , double columned, frontispiece plate tinted with silver, tissue guard, text illustrated with bluish tinted engravings. Presumed first edition thus, with no date (circa 1880) and in the green cloth (later editions were in blue or red cloth or were noted as to printing). Very good, minor rubbing to the beveled edges of the covers, shallow waer at the spine ends. Some embrowning to the page edges. Stray mark on the frontis tissue guard. Edward Whymper was a British mountaineer who was the first to ascend the Matterhorn in 1865. He also made first ascents of Mont Blanc, Chimborazo in South America and the Canadian Rockies. His "Scarambles Among The Alps" was first published as a seperate work in 1871 and is considered a cornerstone mountaineering title. Lady Murphy's "Down The Rhine" apparently only appeared bound with Whymper's book. Very Good. Item #E21171
