New York: Grosset & Dunlap, (1916). Reissue Hardcover in grass green cloth decorated in brown with design of crossed bays, ball in glove, and catcher's mitt. (There are two variant bindings on the early G&D issue of The Matty Books; this binding and a plainer one in emerald green with black lettering and simple design.) The rear panel of this jacket lists to "Second Base Sloan" (1917) for Mathewson booksand rear flap list of Tom Slade books to "At Black Lake" (1920). 328 pp. with frontispiece illustration by Charles Relyea. A tight, generally fine example in the original color illustrated dust jacket with large old-time glove with ball in forefront, chip to head of spine, narrow chip along part of top edge of rear panel, moderate wear to the extremities . One of the set of boys books "written" by New York Giants immortal and Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson. Mathewson had retired from active play by this time and was on his way overseas where a dose of mustard gas would contribute to his early death from tuberculosis at age 45. The final book in the "Matty" series, "Third Base Thatcher" was issued over the name of Deacon Scott of the Yankees. fine Hardcover (Item ID: E19957)
