Nathaniel Ward (1578-1652) was a Puritan clergyman born in England and who came to Massachusetts in 1634. He was a minister in Ipswich for two years and during this time wrote the first code of laws (or constitution) to be authored in America, "The Body of Liberties" which was adopted by the Massachusetts Bay colony in 1641.
