Interior clean and fine, the wrappers are wrappers are creased and chipped where they extend beyond the text block, few stains. Very scarce original printing of this collection of old Virginia recipes; Emma Jane was an elderly African America woman who lived with Moncure's family for over half a century. The first 13 pages of the text is presented as a narrative (in "Negro dialect") by Emma Jane describing how many of the dishes served to the family were prepared. The remainer of the book consists of recipes for breads, meats, vegetables, cakes and desserts, pies, candies, pickles and preserves, as well as asection on sample menus. Extremely scarce.
