Austrian novelist Vicki Baum wrote this novel about a high-end Berlin hotel and the various persons who worked and stayed there in the boom period of the late 1920s. It was an enormous best seller and was adapted into a stage play by William A. Drake which ran to great popularity in Europe and had a year-long Broadway run in New York. Drake then adapted the book and play into the 1932 movie version which starred Greta Garbo (it wa sinnthis film that she uttered her iconic line, "I want to be alone..."), John and Lionel Barrymore, Joan Crawford, Lewis Stone, Wallace Beery and others. Now considered one of Hollywood's iconic films, it won the Best Picture Oscar, the only such winner for which none of its actors or actresses also received nominations. The play was revived as a Broadway musiclal in 1989. Quite scarce in dust jacket (which has the same design as the first editions of the book but differs from that of the 1932 "photoplay" edition).
