Illustrated softcovers. 160 pp. Long inscription by the author, signed and dated 9/22/86 on the the title page. Near fine, top and side edges of the front cover toned. Miguel Pinero (1946-1988) was born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York City. He turned to a life of crime as a young man, joining a street gang at age 13. At 25 he was sentenced to a stretch in Sing Sing prison during which time he wrote the play "Short Eyes". After his release, the work was performed in community theater at Riverside Church where it was seen by impresario Joseph Papp. Papp brought it to Broadway where it became the first Broadway show written by a Puerto Rican, garnered six Tony nominations, won a New York Crama Critic's Circle Award and Obie (1974); it also had a successful European run.
