William Benjamin Carpenter (1813-1885) was a British physiologist and zoologist; his early work in marine zoology led to critical advances in that field in the 1860s. In 1853, his book "The Use and Abuse of Alcoholic Liquors" was among the first to treat alcoholism as a disease.
