Important early American temperance work that traces efforts to battle intemperance from Biblical days, with a section on the practices of making and the composition of wines in the pre-Christian era; among other chapters in the book are "Temperance Among The Heathens", "The Discovery of Alcohol", "Intemperance in Connexion with The Church", "Efforts to Surpress Intemperance from the Apostles to 1800" and , in the final section, detailed look at Temperance Societies in America between 1833 and the publication of this book. A tight, bright example, spine gilt bright, minor wear at the extremities; scattered light foxing to the text, more so to the first 30 or so leaves.
