The Medieval Erotic Alba : Structure As Meaning
Jonathan Saville

New York: Columbia Univ Pr, 1972. First edition First edition. Hardcover. 315 pp. with index, bibliography. A study of the form of lyric poetry known as the "alba", a form which first made its appearance in Southern France in the mid-12th century and rapidly spread to the other countries of medieval Europe. The plot was always similar: the ecstatic love-making of a knight and a lady (not his wife) is interrupted by the dawn, signalled by bird song or the call of a watchman. The lovers must part, the knight going off into the world while the lady remains behind in anguish. Fine in dust jacket with fade to the spine. Fine Hardcover 9780231035699 (Item ID: E12251)
