Autobiographical account of Englishman George Ballantine, who came to the United States in 1845. Upon arrival, he nearly signed on as a hand on a whaler but rather responded to the inducements of recruiting poster and joined the Army. What follows is an intelligent, fascinating account of Army travel and life as well as of the author's service in the Mexican War. A solidly very good copy, hinges firm, spine gilt clear; moderate wear at the very ends of the spine, some bumping at the tips. Scattered foxing throughout. Item #D9910
