Dreiser's classic novel of a destitute young woman who, working as a hotel maid, meets a Senator who becomes infatuated with her. She is impregnated but he dies before they can marry. She later finds work as a lady's maid in Cleveland, falls in love with the wealthy son but, due to society's disapprobation, they cannot marry.
