Early Telephone Customer Contract dated 1884 at Yonkers, Westchester County, NY

1884. manuscript. Partly printed document 8 1/2" x 11", blanks filled in by hand. Top portion states "Exchange Contract" followed by several paragraphs of fine print, then with sections filled in by hand. The contract, dated April 1st, 1884 is with The Westchester Telephone Company for telephone service at a residence on Warburton Avenue in the City of Yonkers. The customer has agreed to pay $4.17 a month for service (!). Signed by the customer and countersigned by the company's General Manager. The word "duplicate" is handwritten at the upper left corner. Light mailing folds and a small stain at the top edge Reverse side is blank. This is an extremely early telephone-related document, coming only 8 years after Alexander Graham Bell's famous first transmission "Mr. Watson--come here--I want to see you." Item #X220
