Ink Signature Cut from a Letter, Accompanied By a Letter of Introduction from Her Brother, Lovell Edgeworth
1823. Ink signature cut from a letter, "I am very truly yours, Affectionately, Maria E." The clip is affixed to a slightly larger slip of paper which in turn is affixed to a small scrapbook page. It is accompanied by a handwritten note from Maria's brother Lovell Edgeworth dated June 17th, (18)43. It reads in part, "In answer to your letter...I have only to say that if you will send up your card with this note to Miss Edgeworth, she will most likely see you as I spoke to her about you before she left Ireland....Yours faithfully, Lovell Edgeworth. Maria Edgeworth (1767-1849), a contemporary of Jane Austen, was the author of plays, novels, short stories and, most numerously, series of tales for the young which infused instruction with entertainment. She collaborated with her father, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, on treatises on education, which have become the most lastingly influential of her works. Her works appeared in print between 1795 and 1848 and included "Popular Tales" (1804) and "Essays on Professional Education" (1809). Her first work to be published, "Letters to Literary Ladies" (1795) is considered an early feminist essay. She was born in Oxofrdshire but spent most of her life in Ireland where she managed her father's estates, drawing on her experiences in writing novels about Irish life. Item #X152
