An early anti-capitalist short novel, published two years after his muckraking meatpacking industry expose book "The Jungle". In t his tale, the son of a corrupt industrialist engages in stock market manipulation without thought for the companies and lives he ruins. When his old fiance is dying of consumption, he turns his back on her as well, despite her pleas that he look after the out-of-wedlock daughter they had had some years before. He loses his fortune when an opponent's market manipulation goes against him but climbs back up the finacial ladder more ruthlessly than before. The book was banned due to its incestuous sub-plot--the man unknowing has an affair with his own daughter. Also, he comes to a bad end. (with thanks to Kara on Goodreads for the plot summary). Fine.
