NY: J.C. Derby, 1856. First. Hardcover. First edition. Octavo in blindstamped red cloth with spine lettered and ornately decorated in gilt. Hand colored frontis engraving titled "The Old Inn".; 360 pps. From the introductory chapter: " From an old memorandum book, lying in my drawer, I find that in the summer of 1836 I was travelling in the State of Vermont...on horseback." The author related that when a violent storm bore down upon him, he sought shelter in a rustic inn, wherein he found a half-dozen fellow travellers. They each agree to tell a tale and the result is this charming collection of early 19th century anecdotal Americana. A tight copy with the cloth quite moderately and evenly dusty, spine gilt clear and complete; some foxing to the prelims and particularly to the frontis and title page amd rear blank. Text is clean and bright. Bit of very shallow wear to the spine ends. Quite nice overall, Item #F412
