INSCRIBED BY LAKE TO ONE OF HIS PARISHONERS AND DATED CHRISTMAS, 1895 ON THE FIRST BLANK. An attack on the theology of Methodist Episcopal Bishop Randolph S. Foster and particularly his 1879 book "Beyond The Grave". Foster, before becoming a bishop in 1872, had served as President of Northwestern University and later of Drew University. Lake was a prominent member of the Methodist New Jersey Conference; in his preface he calls Foster's book "...one of the most dangerous books ritten in the nineteenth century..." Very good, even soiling to the cloth and bumping to the tips; front free endpaper is torn but still attached. Item #E5242
