Half-title, title, xiii (preface and contents) with errata notes verso of p. xiii; 526 + advert listing of three additional books by the author. TIPPED IN AT THE REAR ARE TWO MANUSCRIPT SHEETS IN AN UNKNOWN HAND TITLED "ON FOOD" that are notes on the subjects of food, diet and eating habits from the Bible, natural science, Mungo Park on the American oak, the bread fruit tree, etc, etc. Seminal work on the treatment of certain diseases by natural means, i.e. diet, clean water, etc., a follow up to Lambe's first book on the subject. A tight, clean example, scattered light foxing; deaccessioned from private library of a medical societ with its bookplate dated 1901 on the front pastedown. Lightly worn at the outer hinges and tips of the leather, all gilt bright. William Lambe (1765-1847) himself became a vegetarian around 1806 in response to his own ill health which had begun while he was still a teenager. While practicing medicine, he became convinced of the benefits of the waters at Leamington and turned it into a spa. Lambe proposed treating cancers and certain other ailments by dietetic methods. He recommended the adoption of a strict vegetarian regimen, the avoidance of fermented liquors and the use of water purified by distillation in place of common water. Item #E4960
