Mechanicsburg, PA: Stackpole Books, 2002. First edition. Hardcover. Fine, fresh, unused copy in equally fine, fresh, unpriced dust jacket. Hardcover. Firs edition stated and number line with "1". 229 pp with bibliography and index. From both an economic and military standpoint the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia was of vital importance to the Confederacy during the four years of the Civil War. But despite its importance to the Confederacy, a small but significant number opposed the idea of an independent Southern Confederacy. It is against this war-torn backdrop that editor Michael G. Mahon presents the diaries of two Winchester women, Laura Lee and Julia Chase, who have opposing viewpoints and in their own words recall their lives at a time when the uncertainties of the violent conflict weighed heavily on the minds of the nation.
