Frontispiece illustration of Lincoln at the bedside of a wounded Confederate soldier. 47 pp. A short historical fiction novella about Abraham Lincoln and the Gettysburg Address that first appeared in Scribner's Magazine in 1906. Lincoln is at first disappointed and self-conscious about the briefness of the speech compared to the much longer one made by Edward Everett. Later, however, in a Washington hospital, the President meets a mortally wounded Confederate soldier who does not recognize Lincoln but praises the Gettysburg Address as "The perfect tribute".
