Stonewall Jackson at Cedar Mountain
Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1990. Book Club. Hardcover. Fine in fine dust jacket. BOMC. 472 pp with bibliography and index. Illustrated with photographs, reproductions and maps. An in depth study of Confederate General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson's command, the last he exercised with independent command of a campaign, focusing on the Battle at Cedar Mountain (also known as Cedar Run or Slaughter's Mountain) in Culpepper County, Virginia on 9 August 1862. It was the first major battle of the Confederacy's Northern Virginia Campaign; Jackson was sent with a force of 14,000 and defeated Union Major General Nathaniel P. Banks. In the late afternoon, Banks made two aggressive assaults on the Confederate lines. Jackson personally led his troops in repelling the actions; it was reportedly one of the few times Jackson drew his sword in battle. The arrival of A.P. Hill and his reinforcements enabled the Confederates to withstand the assault and counterattack, forcing Union forces to retreat. Fine / fine. Item #E37131
