"The Obelisk" in New York City's Central Park is one of a separated pair of ancient Egyptian obelisks (the other is in London) that were carved in Heliopolis (today's Cairo) during the New Kingdom period (c 16th century-c 11th century BCE). In the West, they have been named "Cleopatra's Needles" after Ptolemaic Quuen Cleopatra VII (50-31 BCE). They stood in Alexandria for nearly two millennia until being moved to London (1878) and New York (1881). New York's Needle was placed in Central Park just outside the then reletively neew Metropolitan Museum of Art's main building. It still stands, on a hill known as Greywacke Knoll, outside the Museum.
