(5" x 7 1/2") in original black half leather ornately decorated and lettered in gilt over pebbled dark brown paper covered boards. 415 pp. + 101 pp. The Table of Contents comprises pp. 6-11. The first section contains four full page wood engravings ( "A Cart Horse", "A Virginia Race Horse", a horse and foal in the "Breeding and Raising Of Horses" section, "Nicking and Pullying a Horse". There also small woodcuts at some of the section headers and footers. The spine is unusually well preserved (very unusual for this heavily used book) with the gilt still bright; minor wear at the outer tip edges of the boards. The text, as virtually always, has some staining on a few of the leaves, foxing as well, and some tidemarking on the first aprox. 25 and last aprox 40 pps., etc but is firm in the binding. Originally published in 1848, the classic and, for the time, most comprehensive study of the horse. It covers virtually every aspect of breeding, raising, doctoring, feeding, horse diseases, physical characteristics and faults (the body parts and such issues as staggering, moon eyes, spavin, crib biting, narrow heels , etc.). There is a section on the veterinarians and a Veterinary pharmacopeia and sections on diseases of cattle, sheep and dogs. The American Stud Book consists of nearly 100 pages, arranged alphabetically by horse's name, ancestry dates going back to the late 1700s, sires, dams, etc.. Not an uncommon book given all the editions but rarely found in such a well preserved original binding. Very Good. Item #E36735
