Hardcover. 236 pp. The author's thrid book, a mystery novel set in the small village of Monksmere on the Suffolk coast. Detective Superintendant Adam Dalgliesh finds that his Aunt Jane's house there is where he could most easily get rid of the deadening accumulation of crime and red tape which constituted his daily routine at Scotland Yard. But long walks and a little desultory bird-watching were (of course) not the only entertaining diversions. Maurice Seton may have passed his prime as a crime writer but his final appearance---mutilated and very dead in a drifting dinghy--ensured for him the undivided, serious attention of the local police. Protocol inhibited Dalgliesh from at first playing the role of more than expert spectator but in the end, the superintendent's knowledge of two very different London worlds---Bloomsbury publishing and Soho striptease---provide the first real cluese.
