Biography of Calvin Coolidge, 30th President of the United States (1923-1929). A Republican lawyer from Massachusetts, Coolidge was 48th governor of the state and was U.S. Vice President under Warren G. Harding, ascending to the presidency upon Harding's death. Coolidge was known as a conservative, "small-government" politician and restored confidence in the presidency after the scandal-ridden administration of his predecessor. His hands-off, pro-business approach enabled the rapid economic growth of the "roaring 20s". In 1924 he signed the Indian Citizen Act that granted citizenship to Native Americans; he also signed the Immigration Act of 1924, restricting non-European immigration and establsih the U.S. Border Patrol. Though eligible to run for re-election in 1928, he chose not to do so. His taciturn personality earned him the nickname "Silent Cal" Fine / fine. Item #E36561
