Hardcover in navy blue cloth ornately decorated with a rural scene and footbridge399 pp. + 4 pp. publisher's ads at rear. Frontis (with tissue guard) and seven additional full page monochrome plates by Clarence F. Underwood. A tight very good or somewhat better example, minor rubbing to the front board illustration; interior clean and unmarked. A best-selling turn of the 20th century romance/ thriller (it was the second best-selling book in America in 1907). Set in the Austrian-Hungary Empire and then the U.S., the novel follows the adventures of American ex-patriate John Armitage. Armitage is in possession of secret documents that could topple a sinister political conspiracy and install him as the rightful ruler of the Empire He flees assassination attempts and returns to the United States to his remote estate in the hills of Virginia, which he calls "the Port of Missing Men". There he is besieged by the conspirators... The book, by Indiana-born author and diplomat was adapted for a silent movie version in 1914. Very Good. Item #E36422
