"Roots" was eventually translated into 37 languages and Haley was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize in 1977. The book was adapted into one of the most successful television miniseries in 1977; it ran for 8 consecutive nights on ABC. The concluding episode garnered what is still the third largest Nielsen rating of any television series and the second most watched series finale in American television history.
