Compiled from Phisterer's "New York in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865 (3rd edition 1912)". As early as 1865, the New York census included "details of enlistments by cities and towns". It enumerated for each city and township the number of men supplied to identifies Batteries and Regiments of the State. Dornbusch compiles the New York State numbers organized by county and within each county the cities and townships, the 1860 census population, then that place's men organized by arm of service (artillery, infantry, mounted rifles, cavalry).
