Hardcover in dark brown blindstamped cloth with gilt design front board and spine lettered in gilt. 279 pp. First edition thus with additional material. Very good, all gilt bright, wear to the extremities and erased but still evident penciling to the front and rear endpapers, some staining to the front endpapers gradually diminishing to the title and first several pages of text. The Presbyterian seminary that came to be known as the "Log College" was founded in Neshaminy (now Warminster), Pennsylvania in 1727 by the Rev. William Tennent; he operated it until his death in 1746. It was indeed a log structure, about 20' x 20', which led to its nickname. The college began during the First Great Awakening at the time of the Old Side-New Side controversy among American Presbyterians. Log College graduates espoused the "New Side" position that favored spontaneity and experimental devotion rather than "Old Side" adhearance to dogma and ritual. An action by the 1739 Presbyterian Synod of Philadelphia led to restrictive conditions in response to which New Side followers were encouraged to charter more "new colleges". As a result, four Log College graduates became trustees of the new College of New Jersey in princeton, the direct ancestor of Princeton University. Very Good. Item #E36038
