Octavo in original plain calf, hubbed spine, red leather srine label lettered in gilt. viii (Preface, index)+ 439 pp. A well used example with rubbing to the leather, especially at the tips and edges, 3" closed split front gutter (thought holding firm). Some foxing and small stains in the text. Original ownership signature (John Toy) and price notation "Price--4---6" on the front free endpaper. The verso of the final page of text has a handwritten genealogy beginning with the entry for the birth of Elizabeth "born on the thirteenth Day of the Sixth Month..Between Nine and Ten in the Morning Ann. 1781". There follows the information about John Toy Junior (Nov. 8, 1783 at the ninth hour in the evening 1783); Rebeckah Toy (May 8, 1787 at eleven in the evening). The genealogy continues (through 1803) onto both sides of the rear free endpaper though this leaf is torn and lacking the upper quadrant. The Quaker ministers, from the area of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, covered in the text include Cuthbert Hayhurst (d. circa 1682-3), Thomas Langhorn (d. 1687); Thomas Lloyd of Haverford; William Yardley (d.1693) ; Rowland Ellis of Gwynedd (d.1729) and many more through the 19th century concluding with Edith Sharples , Concord, Pennsylvania (d. 1787).
