The narrative begins in May, 1969, with previews and the opening of Elkins controversial "Oh! Calcutta!" and ends in October, 1970 with the opening of the play "The Rothschilds". It chronicles between those dates the producer's highly developed , sophisticated madness---such as negotiations over a proposed chain of restaurants to be named after his hit movie, "Alice's Restaurant"; Hilly's marriage to actress Claire Bloom; producing the films "A New Leaf" and "The $100.000 Misunderstanding"; producing Ibsen for claire; tribulations with Kurt Vonnegut over "Cat's Cradle", and wheeling and dealing over half a dozen other projects.
