Large quarto (oversized) hardcover in ornately decorated black cloth hardcovers stamped in gilt and light blue floral design and depiction of the Statue of Liberty. Tight and fine except for a tiny nick to the top rear corner of the spine. 228 pp. Decorated title page as well as all borders, decorated chapter headings. Illustrated throughout with photographs, maps (including one folding map), 2-color drawings and one tipped in color painting reproduction "The Spirit of The Argonne". Laid in is a 2-sheet military newspaper, "The Bullet-In" published by the 306th machine Gun Battalion dated at La Chappelle du Chene, March 15th, 1919 featuring as one of the main stories, "Seventy-Seventh's Major Casualties Heavy". Also laid in is an order black for additional copies of the book ($1.60 to Division members and $2.60 to others). The 77th Division of the United States Army was the first national Army draftee division to be dispatched to Europe during World War I. Their base of recruitment was New York City; it was nicknames "The Statue of Liberty" or "Liberty" Division" as they wore a uniform patch with the Statue of Liberty depicted. They were also known as the "Metropolitan Division" or "melting pot division" due to the diverse number of nationalities drafted into its ranks. As part of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF), they were first dispatched to France to a position behind the British lines. This commemorative volume contains history, poems, and illustrations about the Division's major engagements from the training of the infantry and artillery in France to the Baccarat Sector, along the Vesle, the move from the Vesle to the Argonne and the capture of the Argonne, the advance on Sedan.
