Johan August Wahlberg (1810-1856) was a Swedish naturalist and explorer. He traveled in southern Africa between 1838 and 1856 and sent thousands of natural history specimens back to Sweden. His three African journals are transcribed here: the South African Journal (Feb. 1, 1839 to March 9, 1845); letters written from March, 1854 to November, 1855; and the Namibian/ Botswana Journal (May 30, 1855 to Feb. 23, 1856). Wahlberg was exploring along the Thamalakane River in Botswana when he was killed by a wounded elephant. On October 8, 1856, he was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, before news of his death reached Sweden. Fine / fine. Item #E35511
