The State And The Farmer
New York: Macmillan, 1908. First edition. Hardcover. First edition. Hardcover in forest green cloth lettered in black and spine lettered in gilt. Fine. A scarce early 20th century work that was based on a paper that originated with a major presidential address by Theodore Roosevelt before the Association of American Agricultural Colleges and Experimental Stations in May, 1907 in Lansing, Michigan. Portions of the book deal with the geographical shift in rural occupations, shifts in agricultural methods and rural institutions as exemplified by the "abandoned farm"; "Society and The Farmer', "The Nature of Social Remedies", the governmental function in agriculture; the redirecting of rural institutions, developing of applicable education. Largely unknown and unappreciated today, this was an important book not only in studying the government's relationship and interactions with its rural population but also given the fact that the late 19th-early 20th century was a critical period in the shift from a rural, agricultural-based economy to one increasingly driven by industrialization, consolidation of industries into large conglomerate corporations and large shifts in population.
