Described as "A Career Romance for Young Moderns", a young adult novel about Stephanie Lane, eager to live and work in New York, though its not easy to find a job. She discovers that her high school classes in typing and shorthand are considered bigger assets than her aspirations. Steph get a job with "Elementary", a monthly magazine for teachers and becomes secretary to the editor, Despite office tensions and jealousies, Stephanie is happy with her progress; her life bdcomes exciting when she meets David Powers, a young copywriter. Dave proposes ..but he doesn't want a working wife and Steph is unwilling ot give up her job... Author Betty E. Haughey (1938-1972) used her own experiences of her years at the University of Pittsburgh where she took secretarial odd-jobs around campus. She edited a small agricultural magazine then went to New York where (like her Stephanie Lane character) her editing, writing and secretarial skills landed her a job as secretary to the editor of a trade magazine. "Stephanie Lane: Editorial Secretary" (1967) was her first and only book but the following year Betty would have a key role in the making of the George A. Romano movie "Night Of The Living Dead" (1968). She worked on continuity for the film, appeared on screen as two different ghouls and was instrumental, along with her friend Richard Ricci, in convincing a U of P schoolmate, Dwane Jones, to audition for the role of Ben.
