Hardcover. 223 pp. The gentle Benedictine takes up the cause of two thwarted lovers--a beautiful princess about to be bartered into a loveless marriage by her venal guardians, and the young nobleman who loves her and refuses to lose her. When the body of the prospective bridegroom is found mangled in a forest, the luckless lover is accused and Brother Cadfael sets out to prove his innocence. Ever aware of the frailties of human nature, uncannily equipped to sniff out a villain, Cadfael is nonetheless surprised when the identity of the true murderer comes from an unexpected source: the Leper House of Saint Giles.
