Chelsea, Massachusetts native Horatio Alger (1832-1899) began writing young adult "rags-to-riches" tales in which impoverished boys worked their way toward success through hard work and determination. The first of these, "Ragged Dick" appeared in 1868 and Alger would eventually write more than 100 more books in the same vein. They were so popular and so widely read that the attributes and experiences of the protagonist boys would go far in shaping American young men's views on the principles of hard work, honesty, and promise of eventual success in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
