Collected here for the first time are two of the earliest extended works of fiction. "The Lion of Comarre", a novella written in 1946, first appeared in a periodical in 1949 but never in book form; "Against the Fall of Night", a novel also completed in 1946, appeared first in a periodical in 1948 and in book form in1953. The novella iss et at the close of the 26th century; the two books have themes in common---in each case the real objectives are wonder and magic rather than any material gain, and in each case the hero is a young man dissatisfied with his environment.
