The Treasure Of The Great Reef

New York: harper & Row, 1964. First edition. Hardcover. First edition stated. hardcover. 233 pp. Illustrated with photographs. Fine in edge rubbed dust jacket. One of the scarcer and most desirable of Arthur C. Clarke's non-fiction books, the story of the finding of sunken treasure on a reef off Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1961. Clarke's associate Mike Wilson was making undersea photos of sharks, groupers, and other fish when he spied below him in the depths, evidence of a sunken ship. The surging currents on the reef were of such surging power that it was only possible to dive two months out of the year. It was only in 1963 that a real expedition could begin and Wilson, Clarke, and a few others ran a small boat, the Ran Muthu, to the site. In this work Clarke recounts the whole adventure during which the party found several brass cannon, pistols, other objects , and bags of silver coins minted in 1702 for the Mogul emperor Aurangzeb.
