Hanro (now Hanro International GmbH) was founded as a hand-knitting company in 1884 in Switzerland by Albert Handschin. Joined by as partner, Carl Ronus, in 1895, they expanded to the manufacture and sale of women's lingerie. Prior to World War I, they exported in large quantity to the United States, the British Empire, and France. During the war they transitioned to manufacturing military underwear. In the 1930s, Hanro expanded their lines to include beachwear and swimwear and eventually outerwear. the company continues today as a retailer of high-quality lingerie, sleepwear and loungewear, with an international presence.
