The "as told to" autobiography of Mance Lipscomb (1895-1976), son of a former slave who,lived naerrly his entire life in Navasota, Texas, supporting himself by tenant farming cotton, plowing, and picking ("from c'aint see to c'aint see") for a meager return. But Mance was also a superb "gittah " player, singer and songwriter, playing the blues at countless "Satddy Night Suppas" where rural black gathered after a long week's work. He was "discovered" in 1960 by Chris Strachwitz of Arhoolie Records who taped songs in his own home and issued a record. The record led to a debur appearance in front of 41.000 people at the Berkeley Folk Festival and launched Mance to instant stardom.
