Steam Steel and Stars: America's Last Steam Railroad

Harry N. Abrams, 1998. Second edition. Hardcover. Oversized hardcover in black cloth lettererd in silver. The second edition. Fine, fresh copy in bright, crisp dust jacket with just a tiny nick to the center of the front gutter fold. 144 pp. The glorious late years of steam railroading in Amrica---1955 to 1960-- are powerfully documented in this captivating book graced by 90 of Winston Link's stunning black and white photographic images. He travelled to the small towns of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina where the Norfolk & Western Railroad operated. In order to capture the full impact and energy of the great trains, he worked mainly at night, setting up complex banks of flashbulbs wired in series to freeze his subjects in dramatic stillness. Here we see not only portraits of the engines themselves but of stationmasters, rural switchmen, , train cleaners and conductors, small stations and huge roundhouses, Equally important is the book's portrayal of trackside rural American life in the 1950s.
