He turned to songwriting, creating with partners like Fats Waller, James P. Johnson, and Hubie Blake. His more than 800 songs included such landmark standards as "Ain't Misbehavin'", Honeysuckle Rose", The Joint Is Jumpin'", "Stompin' At The Savoy", and the bawdy "My Handy Man". He was just 17 years old when his first professional song, "Baltmo'" was performed at the Winter Garden Theater in New York.
