Secret History of The American Revolution (signed by the author)
New York: Viking Press, 1941. Second printing. Hardcover. Hardcover in red blindstamped cloth with spine lettered in gilt. SIGNED BY VAN DOREN on the front free endpaper. Second printing. Fine in very good dust jacket. 534 pp. with index. Van Doren's classic, scholarly chronicle of treachery, bribery, and coercion in the most critical period of the American Revolution. The Secret Service papers of Sir Henry Clinton, from 1778 to 1782 Commander-in-Chief of His Majesty's forces in North America, form the basis of this behind-the-scenes account of the fledgling new United States battle for freedom (Van Doren was the first scholar to be granted access to the papers). The central core of this secret chronicle is, as one might expect, the Benedict Arnold conspiracy; Van Doren covers long periods before and after the culmination of the plot. An appendix is included that gives a literal transcript of the complete Andre-Arnold correspondence and here, or in the body of the book, the reader will find some 60 unpublished letters between Arnold and the British (only about a half dozen were previously known). Fine / very good. Item #E28982
